Energy Box supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
no poverty
end poverty in all its forms, everywhere
SDG targets
By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.

By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance.

Ensure significant mobilisation of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions.

Energy Box impact
We create and support sustainable profitable microfranchises that provide permanent freedom from the poverty cycle to the owners and their families.

Solar products and efficient cook stoves save time and money that can be spent on education and food.

Productive educated families have increased earning capacity.

zero hunger
end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
SDG targets
By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.
Energy Box impact
By creating scaleable income generating capabilities in BoP communities, Energy Box will economically empower poor and vulnerable people to provide for their basic needs and end hunger.

Fuel and time saving products save money that can be spent on food.

good health and well-being
ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
SDG targets
End preventable deaths for children under 5 by 2030. Substantially reduce the number of pollution related deaths and illnesses by 2030.
Energy Box impact
4.3 million people die worldwide annually from the effects of indoor cooking on an open fire or fumes from paraffin.

Lower respiratory disease and pneumonia caused by indoor air pollution is the leading cause of death in children under 5.

Our clean cook stoves reduce the toxic emissions from cooking on an open fire or with paraffin by up to 67%.  This significantly reduces coughing and burning and itchy eyes and the risk of pneumonia by 50%.

quality education
ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
SDG targets
By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development care.

By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.

By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations.

By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development.

Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.

Energy Box impact
Formal development of business and life skills of our franchisees is a cornerstone component of our model.

Our business incubation programme will provide our business owners and their employees with portable skills and capabilities to enable their economic independence.  Our programs empower youth and women.

Planned crèche franchises will provide effective high quality early childhood development programmes to the community.

gender equality
achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
SDG targets
End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.

Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance and natural resources, in accordance with national laws.

Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women.

Energy Box impact
We make owing a multi-generational business asset possible for women that participate in the Energy Box model.

We train and develop women to run their own business and become self-sufficient.  We hire women and focus on advancing women.

Energy Box products make a life changing impact on womens’ daily lives.  They empower women by increasing the time available in a day to be more economically active and care for the needs of their families.

clean water and sanitation
Ensure access to water and sanitation for all
SDG targets
While substantial progress has been made in increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation, billions of people—mostly in rural areas—still lack these basic services. Worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water, two out of five people do not have a basic hand-washing facility with soap and water, and more than 673 million people still practice open defecation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the critical importance of sanitation, hygiene and adequate access to clean water for preventing and containing diseases. Hand hygiene saves lives. According to the World Health Organization, handwashing is one of the most effective actions you can take to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus. Yet billions of people still lack safe water sanitation, and funding is inadequate.

affordable and clean energy
ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
SDG targets
By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services.
Energy Box impact

Convenient, at their doorstep access to our products saves families time, money and improves their health.

decent work and economic growth
promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
SDG targets
Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services.

By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value.

By 2020, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training.

Energy Box impact
SMME* development fuels economic development and job creation worldwide.  Energy Box microfranchises are a vehicle for SMME development in our target market.

The scaleability of our model will assist in broadening our impact across a large base of people at the BoP including women and youth.

 * Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises, otherwise known as SMME’s
industry innovation and infrastructure
build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
SDG targets
Increase the access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises, in particular in developing countries, to financial services, including affordable credit, and their integration into value chains and markets.

Significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries by 2020.

Energy Box impact
We fuel microfranchises.  We create small enterprises, ensure that they obtain funding to start up and run sustainably, provide them with secure and sustained supply and train, mentor and monitor them continuously.

Innovation in terms of business model and product offering is key to our success.

Our model brings SMME’s* into the formal economy, integrating them into value chains that will ensure their survival and growth.

All our franchises use innovative cloud based point of sale systems integrated into basic cloud based accounting apps.  Add on products sold from each franchise include airtime and data giving the community access to these products at their doorstep.

 * Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises, otherwise known as SMME’s
reduced inequalities
reduce inequalities within countries
SDG targets
By 2030, progressively achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40 per cent of the population at a rate higher than the national average.

By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status.

Ensure equal opportunity.

Energy Box impact
According to the World Bank, South Africa is one of the most consistently unequal countries in the world.  The income Gini coefficient is currently between 0.66 to 0.7.

The focus of our activities is exclusively for previously disadvantaged individuals.

Owning a franchise is made accessible to black South Africans in township communities.

SMME* development with our Energy Box model expands economic inclusion in these communities and will contribute to reducing income inequality.

 * Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises, otherwise known as SMME’s
sustainable cities and communities
make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
SDG targets
By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.
Energy Box impact
Our clean energy products support the goal of air quality.  A well-lit home is a safe home, walking in the dark with a solar lamp provides extra safety.

Our franchise model keeps income inside the township community resulting in more money being spent in the township.

Our various microfranchises, especially factories-in-a-box, will also supply retail boxes creating an inclusive value chain.

climate action
take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
SDG targets
Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.

Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities.

Energy Box impact
Our Energy BoxesTM will assist in reducing CO2 emissions.  Up to 25% of global CO2 emissions are generated by the poor simply undertaking the daily activities necessary for their survival.

Our business model provides modern solutions to these needs in ways that advance the global effort to combat climate change.

Furthermore, the marketing of our products in poor communities will raise awareness and promote education around the benefits of clean energy.

life on land
protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
SDG targets
By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.

Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.

Energy Box impact
Over 3 billion people worldwide still cook every meal over an open fire using wood or charcoal as their main fuel source.

Energy Box efficient cook stove products reduce wood and charcoal consumption by up to 68%.

These interventions dramatically reduce deforestation and the destruction of bio diverse ecosystems in the developing world.
